Part of The Recycled Retriever’s vision is to get people to take small steps toward cleaning up the environment. Many people taking small steps will add up quickly!
One small step is to purchase an Eco-friendly pet bed when the time comes for a new one. There are great companies doing great things with materials made from recycled soda/water bottles, organic cotton and other post-consumer materials.
Which bed to purchase is a personal decision between you and your pet. Here are a few tips to consider:
1. Keep quality in mind. Not all beds, even Eco-friendly ones, are made the same. Paying a little more and going for quality can be a good thing.
2. Decide if it matters to you if a product is made in the USA. There are many people who want products specifically made in the USA to ensure that the carbon footprint of the product is low. Others are okay with beds made outside the USA as long as they are made from post-consumer materials and/or organic material. It’s a personal decision.
3. Size matters. Measure your dog and/or their current bed. Get all the information together before making the purchase. Very few, if any, stores will allow returns of pet beds.
4. Buy something that you like and will enjoy having in your home. Don’t buy a bed just because it is Eco-friendly. There are many options to choose from. Buy something that you like!
My personal choice was the Eco-friendly Bumper Bed with a “seaside” bolster and “laguna” center pillow. Arnold, my toy poodle puppy pictured here, loves it.

Meet Eco-friendly Recycled Retriever Maxwell!

Maxwell and his brother Oscar are rescue cats from Cozy Cat Cottage in Powell, Ohio. This picture may not capture it 100%, but Maxwell is a very loving cat that is very affectionate. It is part of his true beauty. I said this about his brother Oscar as well, but Maxwell could be the “poster cat” for all the fantastic animals that are awaiting adoption in shelters and rescues.

A few months ago I was inspired by a winery out of California that donated a portion of their profits to a local dog shelter. It was a great cause and a great wine! Now, I have found another great winery, Dog House, that donates a portion of their profits to an organization that provides guide dogs free of charge to the blind.
I had the 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon form Dog House. As I like to do, I read the label and discovered that they donate a portion of their profit to Guide Dogs for the Blind. It’s a great cause that they support. Guide Dogs for the Blind, with their vision “to use Power of Partnering to improve quality of life”, is an organization that partners blind people with trained dogs. Dog House’s wine label says that the Cabernet Sauvignon is a doggone good wine… at The Recycled Retriever we could not agree more! Beyond the very great label, it’s a delicious wine. For me, a wine becomes even more enjoyable when you know that it is produced by good people doing good in the World. Kudos to Dog House!
Now I am on a mission to find more wineries that support dog and cat causes. Let me know if you find one that I should try.

According to the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), over 85% of dogs over 4 years old suffer from periodontal disease. February is National Pet Dental Month sponsored by the AVMA to bring awareness to the importance of oral hygiene for dogs.
I was shocked at how high the percentage of dogs suffering from the disease.
A few questions to help determine periodontal disease…
Does your dog have bad breath?
Has your dog lost his appetite?
Is there plaque and/or tartar buildup on my dogs teeth?
Are my dog’s teeth discolored?
Does my dog have any loose teeth?
Is my dog uneasy with me touching their mouth?
Is there any bleeding in my dog’s mouth?
In order to fight periodontal diseases, you have to have the right tools at hand…
Toothbrush and Toothpaste
Chew Toys
Dental Toys
Rope Toys
The Recycled Retriever can help…
February 1st - 4th
15% off selected dental care items
10% off the entire store
