In 2010 The Recycled Retriever will spotlight organizations and people that are doing good on behalf of the animals that we love. Each month we’ll share with you a shelter that is doing good! In addition we encourage you to share your personal stories with us. Thank you in advance for helping encourage awareness.
To kick off our Shelter Spotlight series, we wanted to start with a personal story about Abbie, our Lab-mix, who was our inspiration for The Recycled Retriever. Abbie’s life started out in a cardboard box that was left in a grocery store parking lot. She and a couple litter mates ended up in a new home at the Capital Area Humane Society in Columbus, Ohio. It was there where we were introduced to “Bette” a.k.a. Abbie. Immediately we fell in love with her. We had no plans to adopt a dog that day! While not recommend for all households this plan… well lack of plan… worked out for us. After filling out all the paperwork and getting approved we left, Abbie in hand, to purchase all the needed (and some not needed) supplies for a new puppy.
The experience at The Capital Area Humane Society was an awesome one. They were very thoughtful and provided a great temporary home for a lot of dogs and cats awaiting someone to arrive and provide a permanent home.

Abbie March 2001: The day we brought her home from the Capital Area Humane Society
Abbie has now been a part of our family for almost nine years. She is loyal friend with compassionate eyes that make us feel secure even when life deals out it’s hard knocks, as life is known to do. It was Abbie who provided the inspiration to start The Recycled Retriever and it was her silhouette as a Lab-mix puppy that is the cornerstone of The Recycled Retriever logo.

Abbie Spring 2009: Almost 9 years later and we can’t imagine our life without her.
To Abbie we say we love you. To the Capital Area Humane Society we say thank you and keep up the good work! To adopt a dog or cat that is looking for a home or to donate your time or money, please contact the Capital Area Humane Society.

It’s been awhile since The Recycled Retriever has put a spotlight on an organization that is doing good. I think we could use a little more spotlights on shelters.
Precious Secrets Sheltie Rescue is located near Cincinnati, Ohio and a personal friend of mine as adopted two Shelties from this rescue. Recently, Precious Secrets has ran into some large financial obstacles due to unexpected medical expenses. Below I have posted their August newsletter. Please consider helping.

At the start of each annual picnic, Cathy and I always get out the microphone and welcome everyone. This year, I stood there alone. Sadly, Cathy took ill at 2:30am and was taken to the hospital by life squad. Thank God volunteers Cindy and Bri were here. They totally took care of our dogs and everything else that had to be done that morning.
For those of you that don’t know, Cathy was diagnosed with Still’s Disease about two years ago. It is a rheumatoid arthritis autoimmune disease and only one in 100,000 adults get it.
Cathy was released later that day. By the time I got her home and settled in bed, our great volunteers had all the items set up for the auction and had even unloaded all the items out of the trailer for the sales booth. Trust me, without these people, this picnic would have been a disaster.Usually at the annual picnic, we give some good news that has happened over the year. Well, this year was totally different. On June 30th, a breeder drove to a trailer park, tossed out a Mom and her three babies. Due to Ohio laws, they were taken to the shelter where they had to be held for three days, just in case the ignorant breeder had a change of heart and wanted to reclaim them. The shelter told us that Mom, had a tumor on her head and therefore was deemed unadoptable (meaning she would be put to sleep) and asked us if we would take her. Of course we said yes and they also allowed us to take her pups with her. Summer’s tumor was removed a few days later and was biopsied. It was found to be benign and should never return. The pups (Rocket, Bubbles and Freckles) where vetted and found to be healthy.Over the next few weeks, we noticed that Bubbles did not always act right. We had extensive testing done (including x-rays). Nothing in her blood work was normal. She was put on antibiotics for two weeks. At first she seemed to do better, but then she went downhill. Bubbles would cry in pain and at times would just stare into space. As the symptoms progressed, we were told Bubbles may need a liver shunt surgery. Although our vet does special surgeries, this was beyond their expertise. Therefore, our vet set up an appointment with Ohio State University Hospital the day after the picnic, but on Thursday Bubbles started having possible seizures. Therefore, Bubbles had to be rushed to Ohio State Vet Hospital. Leaving this little tiny puppy there was one of the hardest things I have had to do. Bubbles was admitted that evening as an emergency case, placed on IV’s and was seen the next day by the internist. An ultrasound was done that day and the liver shunt was confirmed. They felt Bubbles was too sick for surgery so they sent her home on a special diet and special medicines that needed to be given three times a day. Surprisingly, within days, we saw a totally different Bubbles. The blank stares, the crying in pain, the drooling, the possible seizures, etc were gone. On Tuesday, Cindy took Bubbles back to her home in Columbus to be dropped off on Thursday at OSU Vet Hospital for her surgery on Friday. The surgery was a success. As I am writing this, Bubbles spent Friday and Saturday in ICU. For the next few months she will have to have a special diet. Plus, she will have to return to our vet for more blood work to make sure her body is responding to the liver shunt surgery.
Sometimes the shunt is so big that the animal has to go through a second liver shunt surgery. Whoever adopts Bubbles will have to understand that she may need a second $4,000 surgery one day. This alone will make it hard to find her a home.
At the picnic, I begged people to bid high on auction items, to buy things at our sales table and to donate anything they could. In short, everything that day was going to Bubbles. Sadly, as of the day of the picnic, this rescue only had $200 in our checking account which obviously would not buy dog food for a month. When I took Bubbles to OSU, I was told her medical needs would cost between $2,500 to $3,500. After seeing the bill for her 24 hour stay and being told what the surgery would cost the day she was dropped off, we are looking more at $4,000. This amount obviously does not include her previous expenses at our regular vet or her future testings. With all this said, we are in desperate need of funds and are begging every one of you for help. No amount is too small. Every dollar counts. If you would like to donate, please send your check marked “Bucks for Bubbles”. If you would rather donate via PayPal, you can do so via our website. We want to thank you in advance for your support!!
I apologize for the email being so depressing. On the brighter side, we have rescued 856 shelties to date. Please check out our website as all the new dogs pictures and bios.
Please give all your furkids a hug and kiss from us. And please remember to send in your “Bucks for Bubbles”. We can not survive without YOU!

Animal Outreach wrote an article about The Recycled Retriever in their Winter 2009 issue of The Animal Insider.
The Recycled Retriever’s mission continues to spread as quoted in The Animal Insider… ”You don’t have to make huge sweeping changes to have a positive impact on the environment. All of us and our pets can begin by taking the first small step.”
A lot of people and pets each taking small steps will add up to big changes!

With the ringing in of a new year comes many New Year’s resolutions. Many people will commit to diets and exercise. While others will give up a vice. This year I say forget about all the resolutions with one exception… giving back.
Giving back can take on many forms. Donations of money and time seem to be the easiest. This year consider the many volunteer opportunities at your local shelters and rescues including fostering or adopting an animal in need. If your time is limited, don’t worry, just take 10 minutes and mail a check to a deserving non-profit organization.
Giving back will make you feel good about yourself and it will truly be appreciated by the shelter or rescue that you choose.
In 2008 The Recycled Retriever blog featured several shelters and rescues. We’ll continue to do so in 2009. If you are looking for an organization to help, start by checking out our blog archive “Helping Dogs & Cats”. Make sure that you research each organization and feel comfortable with the management and care given to the animals.
Here’s to giving back in 2009! Best wishes to all.

The Recycled Retriever is dedicated to bringing quality resources to the community. There are many hardworking animal shelters who are working everyday to find homes for loving and deserving dogs and cats. It is with pleasure that we introduce you to Second Chance Humane Society.

In Their Own Words:
Second Chance Human Societyis a 501c3 non-profit all volunteer organization created to help the many abandoned pets (primarily dogs and cats) in our area find shelter and new forever homes. Most of our animals have been found by good Samaritans who bring them to us, or from pet owners who need to surrender their pets for various reasons.
Each animal in our care receives thorough vet examinations and any vet services needed to ensure good health. Each is also evaluated for temperament to help us determine the best possible home situation and if any behavior modification and/or training is needed prior to adoption.

DogSOSis an animal rescue organization in Columbus, Ohio. Their purpose is best revealed in their own words from their web home page…
DogSOS is a 100% volunteer organization dedicated to saving the lives of abandoned, neglected and abused pets. As a community organization, DogSOS seeks to promote education about spay/neuter, behavior issues and proper re-homing of unwanted pets. Although our focus is primary on rescuing dogs, we also rescue cats, kittens, & other animals.
Every animal in our care is treated like our very own. It is important to us that we place our dogs (and all our rescued animals) in homes that will suit their needs; making sure that adopter and animal are a good match for each other. All adoptions are subject to an adoption application and agreement.
